Introducing the BlueTally MCP Server: Ask Your Asset Inventory Anything

We're excited to launch the official BlueTally MCP Server. You can now connect BlueTally to your favorite AI assistant - Microsoft Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT, or any other MCP-compatible client - and get live answers about your IT inventory in plain English.

No exports. No dashboards. No query syntax. You ask a question, and your AI assistant pulls the answer straight from your BlueTally account.

Why we built this

If you manage IT assets, you know the drill. Someone asks "what's Jane still holding before she leaves on Friday?" and the answer lives across three screens: her employee record, her checked-out assets, maybe a license or two. It's all in BlueTally - but you still have to do the clicking, filtering, and cross-referencing.

AI assistants are now part of the daily workflow for most IT teams. But out of the box, they know nothing about your environment. Ask ChatGPT which of your Dell laptops are unassigned and it can only shrug - it has no access to your data.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard originally introduced by Anthropic, changes that. MCP gives AI assistants a secure, standardized way to connect to the tools where your data actually lives. It has quickly become the de facto standard for connecting AI to business systems, with native support in Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Cursor, and a fast-growing list of other clients.

The BlueTally MCP Server is that bridge for your asset inventory. Connect it once, and your AI assistant of choice can answer questions using live data from your account - with the same rich detail you'd see in the app.

What you can do with it

Find anything, instantly. Ask questions the way you'd ask a colleague:

• "Which Dell laptops are currently unassigned?"
• "What's checked out to jane@company.com?"
• "Show me the full history of asset BT-1042."

The assistant handles the filtering, cross-referencing, and history digging for you.

Streamline offboarding and audits. Some of the most tedious ITAM work is really just gathering context from multiple records. Now it's a single question:

• "Who's pending offboarding, and what are they still holding?"
• "Which assets haven't been audited in the last 12 months?"
• "List all maintenance events for our conference room equipment this year."

Analyze and report on the fly. Because your assistant sees the same detail you would in the app, it can summarize, compare, and spot patterns across your whole account:

• "How many licenses do we have for Adobe, and how many seats are actually assigned?"
• "Summarize laptop purchases by manufacturer over the past year."
• "Which locations are running low on consumables?"

Covers your whole account

This isn't a limited integration exposing a handful of fields. The BlueTally MCP Server covers assets, employees, licenses, accessories, consumables, components, audits, maintenance records, and your full activity history - plus all your supporting records like locations, departments, statuses, categories, manufacturers, products, and suppliers.

Every answer comes back with the same depth of information you'd see inside BlueTally itself.

Read-only and secure by design

We built the MCP Server the way we build everything at BlueTally: security first.

• Read-only, always. The server can retrieve data but can never create, edit, or delete anything. An AI assistant connected through MCP cannot check out an asset, modify an employee record, or touch your data in any way.
• Scoped to your company. The connector authenticates with your existing BlueTally API key and is strictly limited to your own company's data.
• You stay in control. Access can be revoked at any time by rotating or deleting the API key - no separate integration to unwind.

This read-only design is deliberate. It means your team gets the full benefit of AI-assisted answers with zero risk of an assistant making unintended changes to your source of truth. And as with everything BlueTally, it operates within our SOC 2 Type II certified environment.

Getting started

Setup takes a few minutes:

1. Generate an API key in your BlueTally account.
2. Add the BlueTally MCP Server to your AI assistant of choice - Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, or any MCP-compatible client.
3. Start asking questions.
